The process
1) Needs Analysis
Pain Points
Student disengagement: Coaches can’t motivate students during the Afterschool Program.
Lack of homework completion: Students aren't completing their assignments.
Poor incentives: Current incentives aren't motivating students.
Research Findings
Students are often disengaged when they are tired, don't feel included and/or don't feel confident among others.
Some helpful strategies:
Make sure that expectations for students and coaches are clear.
Build a supportive learning environment through group work.
Use peer mentors to foster collaboration.
Assign an objective to students to achieve each period.
2) Design
The learners
Learner backgrounds: Teachers with various subject expertise.
Learner expectations: Clear, engaging, easy to follow, considers students with special needs (ADHD).
Medium and genre:
In-person: Suits the instructional topic, teachers are already on location.
Workshop: Teachers are familiar with this type of activity.
Learning theory:
Classical approach: To meet learners' expectations.
Collaborative activities: To increase engagement.
3) Solution
A 30-minute in-person workshop
Authentic and meaningful
While the client requested an online format, an in-person program better suits the course content, as it mirrors the working environment of teachers.
Contains cost and meets timeline
An in-person program is more cost effective and can be developed more quickly, meeting the sponsor's timeline.
Potential impacts
An increase in student academic performance.
An increase in revenue as current parents will be more likely to refer the school to other parents.
